This system is now the only legally authorised way to digitally submit and validate catch certificates for imports into the EU. The aim is to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) as well as to ensure end-to-end transparent traceability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Current problems and delays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past few days, there has been a\u00a0<strong>significant accumulation of technical faults<\/strong>, especially in Belgium and other EU ports.<br>The problems range from\u00a0<strong>Validation errors<\/strong>\u00a0about\u00a0<strong>non-functioning data synchronisation<\/strong>\u00a0up to\u00a0<strong>System failures<\/strong>, which have led to backlogs at several European ports.<br>Some authorities - including the Flemish fisheries authorities - are currently reporting\u00a0<strong>Massive delays in the processing of catch certificates<\/strong>. Many applications cannot be processed or can only be processed to a limited extent due to technical problems in the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means for importers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In some cases, amendments to the system cannot be made on time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New applications are currently being prioritised in order to systematically document system errors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are delays in validation, which temporarily disrupts supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background: The new EU regulation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CATCH digital system is based on the updated version of the EU-IUU regulation; significant changes have been made to the CATCH system.&nbsp;<strong>on 10 January 2026<\/strong>&nbsp;in force.<br>Additional data fields and stricter requirements were introduced, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Details of the fishing gear used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extended fishing area information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mandatory digital transmission via CATCH<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>standardised documents for all EU member states<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition from paper documents to a fully digital import control system was a central component of the reform.<br>The aim of the EU is in particular<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher data quality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved traceability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction of IUU fishing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-time transmission between importer, authorities and EU systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Current implications for supply chains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the EU-wide introduction of the system has led to considerable initial difficulties.
